LET'S KISS AND MAKE UP

Yesterday's Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel newspaper had an interesting article that validated research I had done many years ago concerning the behavior of chimpanzees.  Dr. Orlaith N. Fraser of the Research Center in Evolutionary Antrhopology and Paleoecology at Liverpool John Moores University in England, found that stress was reduced in chimps who were victims of aggression if a third chimp stepped in to offer consolation.

This consolation usually took the form of a kiss or embrace.  It turns out that chimpanzees use hugs and kisses the same way that we humans do.

When I was attending college in New York City, I used to go to the Bronx Zoo quite a bit, and stare for hours at the chimps.  I observed that not only did they hug and kiss after aggressive behavior, the aggressor sometimes would give the chimp who was the victim of the aggression flowers or even sexy lingerie.

Dr. Fraser and his colleagues studied chimps at the Chester Zoo in England from January 2005 to September 2006, and recorded instances of aggression such as bite, hit, rush, trample, chase and threat.  In an amazing and eerie coincidence, the law firm who represented my first wife in our divorce was, Bite, Hit, Rush, Trample, Chase and Threat.

See You Tommorow (but for not much longer if you don't start commenting)
