Bobs Eye View

IT ISN'T BRAIN SURGERY

Yesterday's Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported that south Flori-DUH has become the "Uninsured doctor capital of the nation."  I knew Flori-DUH would eventually be number one in something.

The article went on to report that bankruptcy has become a growing option for uninsured doctors, although for the average American, bankruptcy has become much harder to declare.  It seems that federal and Florida laws shield the main home, retirement accounts, annuities and life insurance from malpractice awards.

The following example was given: Uninsured Juno Beach neurosurgeon Jacques Farkas filed for bankruptcy in 2004 after two patients sued.  In one of the cases, a paralyzed man said in his lawsuit that his brain had been pierced by a back rod Farkas implanted badly.  I don't know about you, but I just hate it when my brain gets pierced by an incorrectly placed back rod.

Bankruptcy court records show Farkas sheltered $2.6 million in assets, including a $1.6 million oceanfront home.  His payout to creditors was $16,200.  The two patients got nothing.  God bless America!

See You Soon.
